SOYLsense

Using remote sensing technology, variation in crop canopy development can be identified, inspected and then managed using variable rate application of nitrogen.

SOYLsense precision nitrogen management allows you to:

  • optimise nitrogen rates
  • increase yield
  • improve crop performance
  • reduce lodging and disease pressure
  • reduce variation in harvest conditions
  • reduce variation in grain quality

Nitrogen has a larger effect on crop growth, yield and quality than any other nutrient. Increasing nitrogen can give a large increase in yield but using too much nitrogen can also reduce yield. Using too much nitrogen will also be financially wasteful and can lead to an increase in problems such as lodging and disease. Excessive use of nitrogen can also increase the risk of leaching into water.

One measure of nitrogen uptake is to assess the canopy of the growing crop. A wheat crop with a well developed, thick canopy will have different nitrogen requirements than a crop with a less well developed canopy. Using remote sensing technology, variation in crop canopy development can be identified and measured to allow fine-tuning and optimisation of nitrogen rates.

SOYLsense is widely used on winter wheat, winter oilseed rape, winter barley and oats.

Why Use SOYLsense?

SOYLsense is based on original HGCA funded research that showed a benefit of £22/ha over uniform application of N. Analysis of results from SOYLsense customers showed a benefit of £30/ha+ when comparing yield and N usage for variably applied fields and uniformly applied fields. Yield responses of between 3% and 8% have been reported by many SOYLsense users.

SOYLsense is compatible with any GPS application system - liquid or granular.

You can view LAI maps and create nitrogen application maps online at our website soylsense.co.uk. Each customer has a secure account giving you total control to view the leaf area index maps and generate application maps.

SOYLsense Pricing

Pricing is based on a whole farm cost, based on area. Three whole farm images will be supplied through the season.

Fields that show potential for variable application can be selected from the whole farm. These fields can have nitrogen application maps created and the customer only pays for those maps that are converted.

Up to 250 ha - £750
Up to 600 ha - £1250
Over 600 ha - £1500
Plus £2.00/ha for N application
